How to reset The End and Nether on a Minecraft server?

Want a fresh End and Nether without nuking your overworld? Follow these safe, clear steps and get clean dimensions fast. Need stability? Check our optimized Minecraft hosting.

Prerequisites

  • Access to your Oxygenserv panel (login and password)
  • A full backup of your worlds (download or snapshot)
  • Server stopped before deleting anything
  • Your world name from server.properties (level-name=world or your custom name)
  • Optional: FTP client for very large worlds

Detailed steps

  1. Stop the server cleanly
Log in to the Oxygenserv panel and open the Console. Click the red “Stop” button. Wait for the logs to finish (you’ll see lines like “Saving worlds” and “Stopped server”). If it hangs, refresh the page and confirm the status shows “Stopped” before proceeding.
  2. Confirm your exact world name
Go to “Files” and open server.properties. Find level-name=world (default is world, but yours might be different like Season3). Write this down: it’s the folder used for the Overworld and the base name for dimensions. Click “Save” only if you changed anything.
  3. Delete End/Nether (Vanilla/Forge/Fabric)
Open the folder matching level-name (e.g., open the world folder). Inside, select DIM-1 (Nether) and DIM1 (The End). Click “Delete” and confirm. To reset just one dimension, delete only DIM1 for End or only DIM-1 for Nether.
  4. Delete End/Nether (Paper/Spigot)
Go back to the server root. Tick the folders [level-name]_nether and [level-name]_the_end (e.g., world_nether and world_the_end). Click “Delete” and confirm. As above, remove only the one you want to reset if you don’t need both.
  5. (Optional) Change the seed for new generation
Edit server.properties and set level-seed= if you want different terrain (e.g., level-seed=8675309). Leave it empty to keep the current seed. The new seed is used when regenerating the deleted End/Nether. Don’t change other values unless you know what they do.
  6. Start and verify regeneration
Open the Console and click the green “Start” or “Restart” button. Wait for “Done” in the logs. Join the server and enter a Nether portal to confirm a fresh spawn. For The End, activate an end portal: you should see a regenerated End with the Ender Dragon alive.
  7. Troubleshooting if it didn’t reset
If you see the old terrain, you likely deleted the wrong folders or have a wrong level-name. Check whether you’re on Vanilla (delete DIM-1/DIM1) or Paper/Spigot (delete world_nether/world_the_end). Using a multiworld plugin (e.g., Multiverse-Core)? Ensure the world names match and re-register/recreate the dimension if needed. As a fallback, stop the server, restore your backup, and redo the steps carefully.

Tips & optimization

Always back up first (keep at least one local and one remote copy). Improve performance by pre-generating End/Nether with Chunky: /chunky world world_nether, /chunky radius 2000, then /chunky start (adjust to your needs). Consider scheduled resets every 3–6 months to refresh gameplay and reduce disk usage. Before major Minecraft updates, resetting End/Nether prevents ugly chunk borders and generation mismatches.

FAQ

Will player inventories be wiped?

No. Inventories are stored in [level-name]/playerdata and aren’t deleted by removing Nether/End folders. Blocks and items placed in those dimensions will be gone. Ender chest contents are tied to player data and are preserved.

How do I reset only The End (or only the Nether)?

Vanilla/Forge/Fabric: delete only DIM1 (End) or only DIM-1 (Nether) inside your world folder. Paper/Spigot: delete only [level-name]_the_end or only [level-name]_nether. Then restart the server.

Does the Ender Dragon respawn after a reset?

Yes. Removing The End regenerates it with the Ender Dragon alive by default. Without a reset, you can also respawn it by placing 4 end crystals around the central portal.

My portals link weirdly after the reset. Is that normal?

Yes, portal links are recalculated. Do one round trip so Minecraft can re-link them. If links are off, place a Nether portal at proportional coordinates (Overworld x/z divided by 8).

You’re set with clean, regenerated dimensions. Keep your backups tidy, and enjoy a fresh End and Nether for the next adventures!
