How to become an Admin/Game Master on an Arma Reforger server?

Want full control of your Arma Reforger server? Set an admin password, run one in-game command, and unlock Game Master in minutes. Clean sessions, zero randoms.

Prerequisites

  • Access to your Oxygenserv panel (login and password)
  • An installed and running Arma Reforger server
  • Arma Reforger installed on your PC (Steam)
  • Server name or IP:Port to join (e.g., 123.45.67.89:2001)
  • An admin password to set in the config

Detailed steps

  1. Stop the server safely
Log in to the Oxygenserv panel and open your Arma Reforger service. Click the red “Stop” button. Wait for the console to show a final “Server stopped” message. Don’t continue until it’s fully stopped.
  2. Set the admin password
Open the “Startup” (or “Settings”) tab and find the “Admin Password” field. Enter a strong password, for example StrongP@ssw0rd!. If you prefer editing the file, open server.json and set: "adminPassword": "StrongP@ssw0rd!". Click “Save” (green button) to apply the change.
  3. (Recommended) Add a server password
To keep random players out while testing, protect the server. In the same screen or in server.json, set: "password": "friendsOnly". Save your changes. You can remove it later for public play.
  4. Start and watch the logs
Click the green “Start” button. Open the console and wait for messages like “Game Host initialized” or “Server started”. If you see a JSON syntax error, re-open server.json, fix commas/brackets, save, and restart.
  5. Join the server from the game
Launch Arma Reforger and find your server in the browser, or connect directly via IP:Port (e.g., 123.45.67.89:2001). If you get “Connection failed”, confirm the server is online and the port is correct. If prompted for a server password, enter the value you set.
  6. Log in as admin in-game
Open chat (press Enter) and type exactly: #login StrongP@ssw0rd!. Press Enter to submit. You should see a confirmation like “Admin logged in”. If you get “Login failed”, verify the adminPassword value in server.json and restart the server after fixing.
  7. Enable Game Master
Press Esc to open the menu. Click the “Game Master” option (or “Switch to Game Master”) if it’s available. If you don’t see it: a) The current scenario doesn’t support GM; b) Switch to a “Game Master” mission from the panel’s scenario selector, save, and restart. Once enabled, you can place units, trigger events, and edit the mission live.
  8. Sanity check and secure
Test a few GM actions to confirm control (spawn assets, objectives). When you’re done, log out with #logout. Keep your adminPassword private and rotate it periodically. For guest GMs, keep a server password to avoid unwanted players.

Tips & optimization

Use a long adminPassword (12+ chars, symbols/numbers) to reduce brute-force risk. While doing GM sessions, set a server password to keep things clean, then remove for public play. Prepare multiple scenario presets (including “Game Master”) to switch fast without editing files. Always back up server.json before changes to recover quickly from syntax errors.

FAQ

I type #login but nothing happens. What now?

Open chat (Enter) and type #login YourPassword with no space before the #. Make sure "adminPassword" is set in server.json and that you restarted the server after editing. If you see “Login failed”, fix the password server-side and try again.

I don’t see the Game Master menu

The current mission likely doesn’t support GM. Switch to a “Game Master” scenario from the Oxygenserv panel, save, and restart. Rejoin, log in as admin, press Esc: the GM option should appear.

How do I revoke admin rights?

For yourself, use #logout in chat. To invalidate old credentials globally, change "adminPassword" in server.json, save, and restart so the previous password no longer works.

You’re set to run tight, custom sessions on Arma Reforger. Take control, guide the action, and deliver epic scenarios.
